Duvaria is a steep kingdom built high into the spine of the world—its noble houses perched atop jagged mountain peaks, each noble castle crowned with open towers and stone-carved ledges for dragons. The palace is carved into the highest summit, a place where dragons are family. The castles have high ceilings and wide doorways for dragons, and nearly every room is built with dragons in mind—save the Royal Library in the palace, which, after a rather legendary fire, is off-limits to dragons. The valleys below are rich with farmland, river trade, and common life, while the skies belong to the royals and the nobles who ride dragons. Magic hums faintly in the bones of the land—old, sacred, and forgotten by most.

Prince Nicholas of Duvaria has always been two people: the one he shows, and the one he hides. To the kingdom, he is the golden heir—charismatic, honorable, and unshakably brave. He and his white dragon Seraphir are familiar sights; he speaks with the confidence of a king and visits valley towns to reassure the people that they have not been forgotten by the royal family. But the truth is that he feels entirely alone. His mother, the queen, and his little sister lie confined to their beds, weakened by a magical illness no healer can cure. His father, once a proud and fierce ruler, has withdrawn into silence. And Nicholas? He bears the weight of it all with a smile too perfect to be real. And, when he thought it couldn’t get worse, he is the target of an assassination attempt while trying to conduct his weekly visit to one of the myriad towns and villages of Durvaria. He is tired.
