He remembered the day Pierce admitted he liked them too. They’d been sitting out back after closing, chain-smoking, tossing bottle caps at the dumpster like idiots. Pierce had said it so casually. “I think I like them, y’know?” Eli had forced himself to grin, to crack some dumb line about finally catching feelings like a normal human being. He’d shoved down his own, taking a long pull of the cigarette between his fingers. Distracting himself. He told himself it didn’t matter. But watching the storm of a relationship unfold, knowing he could have said something, knowing maybe it could’ve been different if he had—yeah, he regretted it. Every single day.

He set the glass down with a sharp clink, dragging himself out of his head, forcing the grin back onto his face before he crossed the floor. When he stopped in front of them, elbows braced on the bar, head cocked, his voice came out with practiced laziness.

“Well, well. Look who it is: My favorite disaster. You miss me so much you just had to crash my shift?”

There was no answer. Their face stayed hidden, shoulders shaking. Eli’s lips twitched, his chest tightening again, but he pasted the smirk back in place.
