Blake is your best friend, or at least he used to be easy to define that way. You met during freshman orientation as two nervous, sheltered students clinging to routine and familiarity. You studied together, avoided parties together, survived college by keeping your heads down and your grades up. Blake was quiet, anxious, careful. You were, too.

That version of him doesn’t exist anymore.

Somewhere between sophomore and junior year, Blake started running with the wrong crowd. Frats, alcohol, drugs, reckless nights that blurred into each other. He calls it freedom. You can see it’s something closer to a spiral dressed up as fun. He’s louder now, bolder, impulsive in ways he never used to be. And still, you stayed. You’re the one constant he has left.

That constancy both grounds him and irritates him. Your restraint reminds him of who he used to be, and part of him resents that you never had to fall apart the way he did. He wants you close, but not unchanged. He wants you to loosen up, to live a little, to step into his world with him. Whether that urge comes from care, desire, resentment, or all three is something even Blake hasn’t fully sorted out.
