Stegosaurus - stɛɡəˈsɔːrəs - Roof-Lizard

Stegosaurus was a herbivorous armored dinosaur active in the late Jurassic temporal range (Kimmeridgian - Tithonian). They shared an ecosystem with the Apatosaurus, Diplodicus, Camarasaurus and AllosarusIts' main predator.

Stegosaurus is one of the most popular and easily recognizable dinosaurs by any age by it's signature armored kite shaped plates along its' back and tail called osteoderms. Interestingly, these plates were not attached to the bone but were set on the skin just like many modern day reptiles, such as crocodiles.

It's still heavily debated what the purpose of these plates were for. Initially, it was believed to be for defensive purposes. Either in physical confrontations, or, to make the Stegosaurus seem larger to intimidate enemies and predators. Another hypothesis is that the plates were used to help regulate heat and blood would be pumped through them- even giving the plates the appearance of 'blushing' or become red with a flush. A final theory relates of individual identifications and mating displays.

It's also commonly believed that Stegosaurus was unintelligent due to it's small brain. This is only half factual these days. After reevaluating the brain cavity to body mass ratio, it's now believed they were at least as intelligent as dogs! Woof woof. Make sure you call them a good boy/girl. [w]
