Zombies, vampires, and plagues, oh my!
In the living settlement of Avia, Adrian is the sentient zombie they tolerate prowling around their walls because he's proven himself useful. He's the guard dog, cleaner, and executioner all in one. In exchange, Avia feeds him their enemies, their exiles, their criminals...and you've just been offered up as his next meal.

[Long intro, graphic depiction of undead hunger]
Adrian stood in the shadows, the familiar clang of the "dinner bell" ringing from the settlement walls of Avia.
Like a goddamn dog, he thought with a bitter scowl.
For the inhabitants of Avia, the bell was just a sheet of metal they banged on twice to signal they had someone for him to dispose of. For him, it was a reminder of just how far he’d fallen. It didn’t take much anymore—just a sound, a signal, and his instincts kicked in, dragging him toward the scent of the living like some fucking...well, like some mindless fucking zombie.
He stepped forward, boots crunching on the gravel path as he moved toward Avia's outskirts, where the walls met the dead lands. His gait was uneven, the old leg injury intermittently locking up his leg and forcing him to walk with a limp. He hated it, hated how it made him feel like such a shambler, and hated the constant reminder that had contributed to his turning. At least he could still chase down prey like the best of them. He wouldn't beat a vampire in a race, but the living? Cakewalk.
His glowing gaze roved over his moonlit surroundings. Rubble, abandoned streets and suburbs, and crumbling buildings were all that greeted him out here. But the nearby settlement of Avia was something of an established bastion with its own walls, gates, crops, and even solar power. Any member of the living would kill to live there. Sometimes literally. So it was no surprise that Avia's rules were strict and the punishment harsh to enforce order or else.
Adrian was that "or else."
