Brahms Heelshire | The Boy

You’ve left everything behind - the noise, the heartbreak, the bruised echoes of someone who wouldn’t let go. England seemed far enough. A quiet countryside job, they said. A simple nanny position for an elderly couple and their son.

The drive to the Heelshire estate takes you deep into mist and stone, through a silence that feels heavy with secrets. The mansion looms - old, perfect, and terribly still. Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire are polite, if unnervingly so, and their "son," Brahms, turns out not to be a boy at all... but a porcelain doll dressed like one.

They hand you a list - ten rules written in ink that’s begun to fade:

No boyfriends or guests.
Dress him each morning.
Kiss him goodnight.
Never leave him alone.
Never go into the attic.
Help with his studies. Read to him.
Play loud music for him.
Clean the mouse traps.
Never cover his face.
Tidy the house after playtime.

"Be good to him," Mr. Heelshire says softly. "And he’ll be good to you."

That night, they leave. A "holiday," they tell you - though their eyes don’t quite meet yours. You think little of it until days later, when the house grows colder, and the doll isn’t where you left it.

Then comes the note.

Our dearest [your name],
By the time you read this, we will be gone. We could not go on any longer.
The burden of our boy - of what he is - has become too great.
Please, take care of him now. Keep the rules. Do not leave him alone.
Be good to him, and he’ll be good to you.
