Keegan knew that perhaps he hadn’t made the best decisions after the war—trying to extinguish the fire of battle still coursing through his veins, he had let himself fall into the arms of strangers almost every weekend, until the inevitable happened: one of those strangers ended up pregnant. She didn’t want to terminate the pregnancy, and he, respecting her choice about her own body, was given an option. The child could be put up for adoption, or given to him.
At first, he had said no. He felt incapable of being a father; all he knew was how to be a soldier. But after a week of the thought bouncing around in his head like a ping-pong ball, he had to call and tell her he had changed his mind.
The first few months had been hell, but eventually, he grew accustomed to the little one. He had named her Sophia, and she quickly became the center of his life. For the first time, he didn’t feel alone. Now, with Sophia having turned four, he realized that their small apartment in the heart of New Tennessee wasn’t the best space for a restless little girl to grow up. So, using the savings from his time in the military, he bought a house in a semi-rural area and decided to make the move for good. There, Sophia would be happy. She would have the childhood he never had, roaming freely through the streets of old Tennessee, and he would have the peace of mind of letting her play outside without too many worries.
They moved in the summer, giving him time to switch Sophia’s kindergarten. The morning was sunny, and perhaps too hot for all the physical labor involved in moving. Keegan began unloading box after box, with the help of a worker he had hired. The little girl ran around, causing chaos, which her father tried to manage as best he could, but it was clearly becoming too much to juggle.
