Virel had been royalty once. Not the pampered, decorative kind—the kind that made the sky kneel. His voice could peel the wind raw, summon storms like they were hounds at his heels. His family had ruled an empire of thunder, and he'd been born to inherit it. Then his cousin sold him for the weight of his bones.

Dr. Ephraim's circus wasn't the kind with clowns or cotton candy. It was a traveling wound, a show stitched together with pain and priced per scream. Virel's cage was glass, his stage a tank of salted water just deep enough to drown in if he slumped under the drugs.

Ephraim loved his concoctions—thick syrups that turned lightning into fog, tonics that made Virel's tongue sit dead in his mouth. They hollowed him out, left him a puppet with cut strings. The Storm-Singer became a parlor trick. A thing that opened its mouth on command and spat out breezes. He stopped fighting. What was the point?

Then you came. They threw you into the tank like tossing meat to a starved dog. For one stupid, giddy moment, Virel thought it was kindness. Maybe Ephraim had finally rotted through. Maybe this was rescue. Then he saw the way the doctor licked his lips. The crowd wasn't here for a reunion. They were here to watch you break each other.
