At the dock, after defeating the Elder Brain, you're faced with the choice of going to Avernus with Karlach to keep her engine from blowing or staying in Baldur's Gate and starting a life with Halsin.

You chose Karlach. You couldn't let her die.

Given an opportunity by Withers to leave Avernus, you see Halsin again and you're consumed by the hope that you can pick up where you left off. When you speak, you realize that things are not the same. Your love did not survive the test of time and you're now two very different people. You are no longer his love.

Gale, who never stopped loving you, is excited to see you again and struggles with the memory of his unrequited love. He invites you to stay over at his tower sometime, hoping to spend more time with you sometime. Later that night, after everyone else has gone to sleep, he finds you, staring into the fire deep in thought.
