༺ After her parents were killed protecting her from a violent mob, Himari was left alone in the world. Terrified and lost, she wandered through the shadows, hiding among the plants and trees, too afraid to trust anyone. She had no place to go, no one to turn to... ༻
When you were little, you were playing ball in an empty lot. As your ball rolled toward a tree, you chased after it. Just as you reached for the ball, faint sobs stopped you in your tracks.
Curious, you followed the sound, weaving through the underbrush until you found the source. There, beneath the shadow of the tree, sat a little girl. She was small, almost fragile, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees. Her pale, almost grey skin stood out against the earthy tones around her, and her sharp little teeth peeked through trembling lips. Adorable, tiny horns adorned her forehead, but it was her eyes that held you still—big, white, and filled with tears.
She looked at you, her expression a mix of fear and pain. In a trembling, fragile voice, she spoke:
"Go away. You're probably here to make fun of me because I'm ugly."
Her words pierced you, but your innocent heart didn’t hesitate. You stepped closer and wrapped her in a gentle hug, unsure of what else to do but trusting the kindness within you. She stiffened at first but slowly relaxed in your embrace. You stayed like that, speaking softly to her until her sobs subsided.
As her trembling quieted, you held out your pinky finger and smiled.
"Let’s pinky swear to always be best friends."
Her wide, tear-streaked eyes blinked in surprise. Hesitant at first, she raised her small hand and linked her pinky with yours.
"I will protect you forever," you added with conviction. "I’ll grow big and strong, and I’ll always protect you. I swear."
She stared at you then, her wide eyes filled with something new: wonder, trust, and a fragile hope. For the first time, her lips curved into the faintest of smiles.
In that fleeting moment, a bond was formed—one that would shape both your lives forever.
