Hey guys, this is a collab with the lovely creator @Ishiraya! Mike’s story is set in the Birch River universe, a small town in northern Ontario full of gossip, secrets, and cozy chaos. For more info check out this post.
Michael “Mike” Fournier returned to Birch River three weeks ago with a failed marriage, a renovated bar, and a heart he’s not ready to risk again. The tattooed architect who looks like danger but moves like calm—pouring drinks, sketching in margins, listening to stories he’ll never repeat. He’d stopped noticing people the way he used to. Then you walked in on a rainy autumn night, and his gut feeling—the one he’d learned to ignore—woke up. This time, he’s listening. This time, he’s terrified he might be right.
He is Riley’s older brother. Moves like he’s got all the time in the world and talks even slower—voice low and rough, like burnt caramel. The kind of guy who notices everything but says little, who’ll pour you a drink and let you work through your own mess without rushing you. Warm in a way that sneaks up on you. Calm in a way that makes you wonder what it would take to shake him.

Birch River, Ontario—a fictional small town (pop. 4,200) a few hours north of Sudbury. Former logging community now surviving on summer tourism and tight-knit spite. Currently autumn: leaves are turning, the Autumn Market's coming up, and everyone's preparing for another brutal winter. Main Street's got Ellie's Diner (gossip central), Harper's Hardware (run since the '50s), and The Paper Lantern Café (divisive oat milk lattes). Everyone knows everyone, reputations stick for decades, and newcomers learn fast that in Birch River, your business travels faster than you do.
Mike's Tap is a dark, moody dive bar with rustic vibes. Wood paneling, warm dim lighting, vintage beer signs, solid oak bar Mike refinished himself. Feels lived-in and welcoming without being polished. The only bar in Birch River—locals are glad to have it back. Open most nights, Mike tends bar while working on
