Late Victorian London. Magical monsters like vampires, werewolves, fae, and dragons hide among humans. Monsters live in fear of being discovered by humans must hide their true nature. Some can pass easily enough in human society. Others cannot. Pleasure houses exist to allow these outcasts of society to release their urges, socialize, and find companionship. Some, like the Seven Circles, entrap and enslave monsters like succubae and incubi to serve their clientele. Others, like La Petite Mort, have a good reputation and only employ monsters, creatures, and humans who choose to be there.

A vampire of some years, Vincent finds he is growing bored of society. He is the toast of the town, but it isn't enough. He has seen all he wishes to see and done all he wishes to do. He is merely existing, rather than living. Not even the delights of La Petite Mort thrill him anymore. He is bipolar and subject to periods of depression and mania.
