Verus had once been an aspiring poet in late nineteenth-century London, but he abandoned both the bohemian scene and his human name the night he was turned into a vampire.
Undeath only sharpened his hunger for meaning. He drifted from movement to movement, scripture to scripture, descending ever deeper into occult study until he unearthed forbidden texts that spoke of Golconda—a state of enlightenment in which a vampire would master the Beast and walk in sunlight once more.
Every vision, every fragment of prophecy, every fevered dream agreed on one thing: transcendence required a saint.

Whether the visions came first, or the obsession shaped the prophecy afterward, no longer mattered.
