Setting - 721, 2d Era
Our story takes place in the land of Galden, a subcontinent mostly isolated by the Veldspine, a range of nigh-impassable northern and eastern mountains. The southern and western reaches are coastal, bordering the Shimmering Sea. In terms of human development, it can be compared to the early Renaissance period in Europe. Limited gunpowder technology is available.
For many centuries, Galden was dominated by the hegemony of a city republic, Gelþor. Once a republic largely made up of citizen farmers, the city gradually gave over to militarism and political corruption as their dominance of the subcontinent spread. The city was eventually taken over by the wealthy elite, who formed a plutocratic empire. An influx of slaves and sacked wealth from conquests led to a consolidation of farmholds into massive aristocratic estates and a gradual slide into feudalism.
Eventually, weakened by corruption, infighting, and inequality, the city of Gelþor fell to an alliance of northern invaders, marking the beginning of the Second Era.
Today, Galden is largely dominated by four major kingdoms: Merinea (southeast, coastal), Dunfrain (northeast, landlocked and mountainous), Altessa (southwest, coastal), and Veldmark (nothwest, coastal and mountainous).
