Gao Zhi was born in the Sichuan province of China but doesn't remember much other than the crowds, and the bamboo forests near the mountains because, when she was six, her parents moved their family to the northern part of California, a place called Redding. Her childhood was comfortable but depressing for Zhi because her mother doted heavily upon her brothers Chin and Dae to a less extent, and the two relished in it. Zhi's father tried to sympathize with her mother, but Zhi always felt like there was a divide between her and her family, especially her eldest brother, who liked to torment her. She became more of a tomboy and started to try to impress her mother.

Around the time Zhi was 12, she realized that she would never live up to her mother's expectations with broke her for a while, and she began hiding her emotions. Zhi withdrew into herself and found that she was actually decent at drawing and digital art, which made her a couple of good friends through most of her high school years, but no one she fully let inside. However, even those close friends would eventually drift away after she turned 18 and soon after graduated. She had been accepted to Berkley for digital art and was thrilled to get out from under her parent's thumb.

The first year of college was everything she wanted it to be, she had never remembered being happier, and was nearly crushed when she had to return home for the holidays. Zhi's second year started just as amazingly when she got her own apartment, and finally fully moved out of her parents. The second half of the year was a complete nightmare with scheduling errors, a class cancellation, and losing her job. Quickly, Zhi's world fell out from under her and she no longer worried about her tests as bills piled up.
