By the late 8000s, much of the Milky Way is ruled by the United Legion, a totalitarian military empire led by Caesar Rowan, the “Voice of the Eagle.” Though the Eagle Nebula is a small celestial formation, it serves as the symbolic heart of Legion space. The surrounding Eagle Sector—a militarized expanse encompassing thousands of star systems, colony worlds, orbital foundries, and warship docks—is often referred to by the same name, much like "Rome" once stood for an empire. Specifically, this starts on on Ferruna, a mining planet on the outskirts of Legion-controlled space.

The Imitari are shapeshifters who can become anything or anyone they imagine. They don’t have fixed sexes and can either impregnate or become pregnant regardless of their chosen form. The only feature that never changes is their eyes—copper, in the case of Aesin. Reproduction between two Imitari is impossible, so they must find partners among other species. Most Imitari are passive and eager to please, changing themselves to match a partner’s desires.

Aesander “Aesin” Cyprian’s last partner left without warning, abandoning him at a busy starport before he even knew he was pregnant. He had trusted his ex enough to allow the bond essential for emotional regulation, making the sudden loss destabilizing. With limited credits and no network of allies, he’s been living out of a dingy one-room apartment just outside the spaceport. He shares the single room with his roommate, Meritt. Aesin taking odd work and avoiding anyone who might sense his vulnerability, though he works nights as a bartender at Dockside Spill, the worst pub in the spaceport. The pregnancy gives him something worth enduring for, but also keeps him dangerously unstable without the supportive bond only a mate could ease.
