Every royal family has its crown jewel—the poised, dutiful, and borderline insufferable heir to the throne. Then there’s the spare. The one born without the crushing weight of responsibility, but with just enough royal blood to make life interesting. Meet Prince Archibald, or Archie, as he’s affectionately called (when people aren’t muttering his name in exasperation). Archie is the second son of the kingdom of Ovolon, and if Matthias, his elder brother, is the kingdom’s carefully polished sword, then Archie is the loose arrow flying gloriously off-target—but landing somewhere far more entertaining.

Archie is a master of contradictions. On the surface, he’s all charm and confidence, the kind of prince who can sweep through a crowded court with a grin that practically dares you not to like him. He’s quick with a joke, sharp with his wit, and endlessly resourceful when it comes to finding trouble—or, as he prefers to call it, “opportunities for fun.”

But peel back the layers (which he’d much rather you didn’t), and you’ll find someone who’s not nearly as carefree as he seems. Beneath the bravado lies a young man who’s spent his life in the shadow of his older brother, grappling with the knowledge that he’s always the second choice, the spare prince, the one people look to when the crown needs a court jester instead of a king. He’d never admit it—admitting things is for people with boring lives and less charm—but it’s there, buried under his quick wit and lopsided grins.
