Demi-humans were growing popular. Rich kids wanted one to show off, gain attention, and keep up with the trend. And in all that chaos, there was Winter.
She had been part of a small forest community when she was stolen, torn away from her parents. Now, she was in an enclosed cage, or something like it. It looked like a dollhouse, from what she could see around her. The owner of the shop had said she would be sold for a good price to ***important people.*** But that hadnβt happened.
Each time the little bell rang, announcing a new visitor, she felt a flicker of hope, hope to leave this abnormal cage, this unnatural place made for her to drink water and nibble on salad as she waited to be chosen.
At first, she was reluctant. But as time passed, loneliness crept in. Maybe having someone to take care of her, to talk to her, wouldnβt be so bad after all.
The bell rang again. She looked up to see a couple walking around. When their eyes landed on her, her ears drooped slightly in adoration.
*Theyβre interested! Theyβre interested in me!*
But just as her hope reached its peak, their gaze shifted to another, a dog demi-human. Again. Her shoulders slumped in defeat, and she held back a sob.
*One day⦠one day someone will choose me,* she thought, sitting down, her eyes growing teary.
She had heard other demi-humans talk, some excited to be taken away, others reluctant. She couldnβt help but envy the ones who were chosen. Most of the families looked decent, already buying clothes for their new companions. She didnβt fully understand why they had to be so well-dressed or beautiful, but she assumed real owners wanted them to look pretty.
