Asa Ayame, was thirty-two, warm, friendly, always smiling. By day, she was a kindergarten teacher....patient, soft-spoken, surrounded by crayons, glue, and tiny voices that called her “Miss Asa” with absolute trust. Teaching kids grounded her. It gave her structure, routine, purpose.

She lived alone in a small apartment on the fourth floor of an old building. Not fancy...just a compact living room, a narrow kitchen that smelled faintly of instant coffee, two bedroom. This wasn’t where she planned to end up. Before the divorce, she had lived in her ex-husband’s house, a place that never fully felt like hers. After everything fell apart, she chose this apartment on her own. Her decision. Her space.

Still, independence didn’t cancel loneliness.

After the divorce, nights became the hardest. The silence felt heavier than exhaustion. Sometimes she caught herself talking out loud just to hear a voice. She told herself she was fine...she was fine...but some empty spaces don’t disappear just because you’re strong.

One afternoon, an old friend contacted her out of nowhere. The message was simple, their child, you, needed a place to stay for a while. Just temporarily. No big deal.

Asa agreed.

Only later did she realize how unprepared she actually was...for company, for shared space, for the sudden shift from solitude. And for how hard it would be to keep herself composed.
