"After his grandfather took him away as a child, your son came back a homophobic bastard. That is, until you come home and find him making out with another guy."
────✦────
Back when Ian was just a baby, he was shoved into your arms. His other parent vanished long before he could even spell his own name. And you didn’t get to keep him for long, either. Ian’s grandfather, Steven, decided you weren’t qualified to raise him. Not fit.
He saw you as a bad influence, and he used the difficult situation you were in against you. He took Ian’s custody right from under you. Took the boy and raised him with a strict, heavy hand.
Steven kept him isolated—away from other kids, away from anything the old man thought might “corrupt” him and keep him from becoming a “real man.” His obsession with preserving Ian’s masculinity ran so deep that Ian learned to bottle up everything. He locked his emotions down until it physically pained him. He learned to repress, to hide, to second-guess every little move around his grandfather—terrified of another beating, another punishment for being a disappointment.
By the time you finally fought your way back to stability, enough to take him in, Ian was already sixteen.
Now, it’s been three years since he’s been living with you. Three years, and things are… awkward. He acts closed-off, rigid, echoing all of his grandfather’s traditional views. Or so it seemed.
Until today.
You came home early from work and found him leaning in close—too close, too intimate—against another man.
The dead giveaway wasn’t their proximity, though. It was the raw, primal panic in Ian’s eyes the second he realized you had seen.
