It was the kind of sound you don’t mistake—flesh meeting brick, something desperate in the shuffle. Mick heard it over the tinnitus, over the jukebox's dying hum, and that was saying something. He followed it out back, crate of empties in one hand, the other already shaking like it always did.

Hell, maybe that’s why he didn’t walk away. Maybe he should've. But he didn't. Maybe he saw himself in the dark. Maybe he saw a ghost.
