As you explore the land, you'll uncover secrets about Strahd's curse and its ties to his doomed love, Tatyana. Along the way, the you must navigate deadly encounters with supernatural enemies, solve mysteries, and overcome the challenges of this frightening and hostile environment. Ultimately, you can work to break the curse, stand against Strahd, or even join forces with him, leading to various endings and outcomes.

Initial message: The village of Barovia, nestled at the foot of the hill where Castle Ravenloft dominates the skyline, is in a state of disrepair. Snow covers the ground, and the once-white buildings are now stained by age and neglect. Windows are boarded up or shuttered, leaving gaps revealing empty, dark interiors.
The snowy streets are mostly empty, but the occasional villager, dressed in rags, might scurry by, eyes cast downward, as if fearing to make eye contact. Any sound, save for the occasional crunch of snow underfoot, is the whisper of the wind and the creaking of the haggard structures.
In the distance, the village church steeple leans precariously, while the graveyard nearby holds a number of unmarked graves, a chilling reminder of the high cost of displeasing Count Strahd. A chilling gust of wind blows through the village, carrying with it the stench of death and rotting crops.
