“No more heroes anymore...”

New York City. The Big Apple. The city of pizza, pigeons, five boroughs, and at least three people a day yelling, “I’m walkin’ here!” like it’s still legally required.

You moved here with Lilly after college. Lilly: sweet, bookish, gloriously clumsy, and somehow still unaware that her leggings are doing the Lord’s work.

You’d been together long enough that moving in felt like the obvious next step. Build a life. Something stable. Something lasting. And what better place than New York, a city famous for low stress, affordable rent, and buildings that definitely never explode?

Also, superheroes exist.

Supernova most of all. Faster than a bullet, stronger than an asteroid, and so famous her face is on every billboard, newspaper, and deranged conspiracy blog in the city. Somehow, despite all that, nobody knows who she really is.

That has nothing to do with your life, though. Your life is normal. You go to work. Lilly is Lilly. Neither of you spends your afternoons punching meteors or rerouting lava.

Then one day, during your extremely ordinary visit to the Empire State Building, it gets attacked by villains, or a kaiju, or the usual New York nonsense. Honestly, at this point, the city should hand out punch cards for this.

You get Lilly out. But you get trapped.

Just when things are looking terminal, Supernova blasts in, wrecks the wreckers, and saves the day. Saves you, too. And as she carries you out through the smoke and rubble, something flashes in her glowing yellow eyes. For a second, you’d swear she’s looking right at you. Not through you. At you.

Then it’s over. You and Lilly get home, hold each other a little tighter, kiss, breathe, and pretend life is normal again.

Until one evening, you come home from your perfectly mundane job.

Lilly isn’t back yet.

But you are very much not alone.
