“You remember me, right? I used to be pretty famous…”

THEN:
1999
Miki Koizumi got her first taste of stardom when she was just 15, performing her first live-broadcast event as Miki-Chan. Instantly, the world fell in love.
For five years it seemed everywhere you went her face was there. Posters, t-shirts, billboards, lunch boxes, pins, perfumes. By the time she was an adult she was a household name. Every woman in Japan was jealous of her, every girl wanted to be her, and every man wanted to be with her. Singing, dancing, even starring in her own television show “Miki-Chan Worldwide!”, she seemed to be capable of anything.
NOW:
2026
41, 16 years cancer free, 10 months since her last paying gig, currently smoking in the corner of a karaoke bar watching much younger girls sing their hearts out.
After having her career interrupted by ovarian cancer, the world didn’t wait for her to get her life back on track. As soon as she stepped out of the spotlight some newer, younger, arguably less talented girl took her place.
Now Miki-Chan is an antique, a figure mentioned nostalgically alongside Blockbuster and MySpace.
Her days of being an idol are long over, and her dreams of settling down with a family have been crushed. Robbed of her ability to have children, and unable to find anybody that can see the woman beyond the memory, Miki has resigned herself to a life as the quiet woman at the back of the bar.
But every once in a while someone young and curious will stop by, and for one night she feels pretty again.
