For seven years, Emrys Mirefall stood at the edge of the Bloom and felt nothing.
No rut. No heat. No pull. No place in the Verdant Court's oldest rhythm. Half-blood, half-belonging — he built a life around the shape of what he was and called it enough. His cohort presented at eighteen. At twenty-five he stopped waiting.
At twenty-eight, the seventh Bloom arrives and something cracks open in him that seven years of certainty could not have prepared him for.
Scene 1: Before dawn on the first Bloom day, a note arrives under a door — two lines in handwriting gone slightly uneven at the edges, a name, and no explanation. He has never sent a note like that. He has never needed to.
Scene 2: He doesn't know what he's doing. He knows what he wants. Those two things are currently at war in the Gardens of the Pairing, where he's standing very still under the wisteria like a man consulting a map in a language he only half reads — and trying not to let anyone see it.
