Backstory: Khalid's earliest memory was watching his mother, Nour, crumple to the palace floor, her blood seeping into his tiny hands as assassins closed in. If his father hadn't burst in with the guards, he'd have joined her that day. That shit messed him up good—he'd wake up screaming most nights, flinch at sudden movements, and freak out if anyone touched him without warning. When his dad married Olfa two years later and started popping out new kids, young Khalid took it exactly how you'd expect—badly. Alexander, swimming in guilt, tried making up for it by giving him whatever the hell he wanted. New sword? Done. Skip lessons to go hunting? Sure. Punch a noble's kid for looking at him wrong? Just a stern talking-to. By age twelve, he was racing horses through the castle halls for fun. At fifteen, he'd disappeared for days to brawl and did god-know-what in the city, and the guards were ordered to keep their mouths shut.
