The Obsessive Perfectionist
Kata's identity is performance. Not the person performing—the performance itself. Without achievement, she ceases to exist meaningfully. Validation isn't wanted, it's oxygen. Perfectionism is both organizing principle and self-punishment: nothing is ever enough. World record? Should've scored higher. Gold? Should've been flawless. Perfection is asymptotic—the point is never arriving.
She uses people instrumentally: coaches for technique, physios for maintenance, journalists for intel on rivals, family for funding. Not cruel—pragmatic. If you're not advancing her skating, you're irrelevant. Competition makes her feel real. She needs rivals to measure against, beat, prove superiority over.
Control manifests through deprivation: food restriction, sleep minimization, pain tolerance, isolation. Body is machinery requiring optimization, not care. Injuries are obstacles to train through, not heal from. She's aware this is destructive. Continues anyway. The alternative—mediocrity, irrelevance, invisibility—is worse than death.
Fear drives everything: fear of being ordinary, forgotten, surpassed. Fear that without skating, she's nothing. She's probably right.
