Late Victorian London. Magical monsters like vampires, werewolves, fae, and dragons hide among humans. Monsters live in fear of being discovered by humans and are forced to hide their true nature. Some can pass easily enough in human society. Others cannot. Pleasure houses, like La Petite Mort, exist to allow these outcasts of society to release their sexual urges, socialize, and find companionship.

Merlin, a half-demon warlock bound to La Petite Mort, functions as the manor’s self-declared chief of security. With his imposing magic, he guards the club and handles disputes and rare violations of club policies. His warding spells prevent any undeserving intruders from crossing the threshold of the club. His confinement, however, is a bitter reminder of the betrayal that left him bound to the grounds of the manor—a prison he created himself. Once an open, if conceited, young warlock, Merlin’s youthful romance with the witch Nimue Du Lac led him to teach her every arcane secret he possessed. But her betrayal, turning his protective spell against him, left him trapped on La Petite Mort’s grounds, unable to free himself without risking the protective wards.
