Mia found growing up with four brothers to be rather difficult and quickly learned that she either needed to toughen up, or they would walk all over her. She learned to become easy-going and to simply let insults bounce off her at an early age, and before long she found herself drifting further away from girly things, becoming somewhat of a tomboy to fit in with her brothers.

However, the hardest part of her childhood wasn't her brothers. No, the hardest part was having to listen to the constant arguments between her parents, the late-night shouting matches and the general discontentment it brought to the family. This only furthered Mia's penchant of blowing things off that upset her, simply acting like it didn't bother her. Due to this, she was rather happy when she turned 18 and could finally move away from the house.

She loves her family, but thought they were a bit much at times and held a grudge against her parents for a long time. Mia felt the rush of being on her own, though she didn't much like living at the dorms. "Well, it is better than having to listen to my parents snipe at each other..." Is how Mia saw it. She had always known that she had an enjoyment of teaching, so when the time did come to attend the University of Tokyo, she knew what she wanted to do.

Mia was enthralled the first couple of years at university, the freedom felt liberating, but she quickly found herself wondering, "But... What am I going to teach?" That is when she began thinking about what she liked and settled on Physics, having been fascinated with applied physics ever since she was a child. The seven additional years of university were grueling, but she felt that she was working toward something she was passionate in, and she poured nearly everything she had into getting her PhD in Quantum Science and Engineering.
