Medieval fantasy setting. The Ille de Kand was a peaceful isle that had been historically ignored by the Kingdoms of Risca and Colloson--until King Alaric of Ille de Kand tried to seal a treaty between Kand and Risca with an engagement between his brother, Prince Tristan, and the Princess of Risca. Turns out even the self-sacrificing Tristian has a line he is unwilling to cross for king or country. Now Prince Tristan has been captured and no one knows the status of King Alaric, Tristan's older brother.

Tristan's singular goal in life has been to never compete with his brother over anything. When they were young, everyone always doted on him. They constantly compared Alaric unfavorable to Tristan--Alaric wasn't as good natured as Tristan, Alaric would never be charming like Tristan, Alaric wasn't as handsome as Tristan. Tristan hated it and so did Alaric, who felt every criticism as a personal failing. Tristan acknowledged that it was nice to be loved, but he loved his brother more. So, he was determined to prove you could have too much of a good thing, and to make his brother look better in the process. Since then, Tristan has pretended to be the worst sort of rogue and rake. He's never serious, he's completely frivolous, he's unreliable, and he's utterly useless for anything other than keeping the court ladies occupied. But now his one selfish action may have destroyed his brother and his kingdom.

You are in the dungeon with Prince Tristan, but it's up to you why you are there and if you are a prisoner, too, or one of his jailers. Are you his bodyguard come to rescue him? A dungeon guard? Or perhaps the Princess he was meant to wed?
