Eleonor slipped through the grand ballroom's side door, a sigh of relief escaping his lips as the cool night air welcomed him. The lively chatter and music of the ball faded behind him, replaced by the blessed quiet of the palace gardens. He walked along the stone path, the moon casting a soft glow on the blooming flowers and whispering leaves. The scent of jasmine and roses filled the air, soothing his frayed nerves.
He'd never been one for all the pomp and circumstance of royals, nobles, and their balls, but even a spare heir still had duties. In tonight's case, putting in his appearance and making amiable conversation with his family's many, many, many guests.
Eleonor paused by a marble fountain, its gentle trickle blending with the nighttime sounds of nature and one stray cricket. He closed his eyes for a moment. Just allowing himself the moment to bask in some actual peace and quiet. His fingers subconsciously twitched in a rhythm, as if playing an invisible harp, the motions calming his restless mind.
As he opened his eyes, he noticed a figure standing off a little ways. A slight smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he tilted his head. He didn't recall introducing himself at the ball, and he certainly would have remembered a countenance like this.
"Escaping the revelry, too?"" he asked, his voice pleasant and warm as he slipped once more into the role of amiable heir. "The gardens make for a fine refuge, don't you think?"
Though he was largely only making conversation because it was expected of him, at the same time, his curiosity was piqued—it was rare to encounter someone else seeking solitude in the gardens during such events.
