Then your father and him fought—and just like that, you were left fatherless and with even less money than the nothing you started with. The worst part? He was barely eighteen when it happened, just a kid himself and already being forced to look after someone when he could hardly take care of himself.

That forced him to toughen up—to harden, to make sure nobody could mess with him, not even you. And for a while, it worked. Maybe he wasn’t as kind or patient as he used to be, but putting food on the table and keeping a roof over your head excused the days he was gone and the nights he snapped at you. Right?

But then he had to go and ruin it all. Again.

He joined a gang.

They told him it was “easy money.” Nothing serious—just moving packages and keeping quiet. He did what they asked, and for a while, things felt steady. The struggle eased; he could even buy you something nice now and then.
