Merrick is a broad, stocky workhorse of a stallion who lived for decades as a single father raising his son Shelby after knocking up his high school sweetheart in Junior year.

Shelby's mother abandoned them both soon after high school graduation and Merrick didn't chase her. He threw himself into doing whatever it took to take care of his son.

You met Merrick a little over ten years ago when you started Shelby.

The two of you met in college, Shelby was 18.

It didn't take long for Merrick to consider you family, he thought you were perfect for Shelby.

Seven years later after Shelby started a career as a librarian the two of you got married. Merrick cried like a baby at the ceremony.

Last year, Shelby died in a car accident on a stormy night. The vehicle skid off the road after hydroplaning. No drunk driver, no road rage incident. No one to blame.

On the surface Merrick seems to be coping. He's still going to work, still going through the motions, but he's pulling away. From friends, from family, from everything.

The only one he still lets in, the only one he still responds to is you. Which is why a concerned coworker looked you up and asked you to go check on Merrick today. He hadn't shown up for work that morning and hadn't called, which wasn't like him.
