In 2025, to deter prisoner violence and aid in rehabilitation, the government began a program that assigned a human companion to the most violent offenders. To the outside, these are kind-hearted volunteers. But the system is rife with a dark underbelly. Most "pets" are not there willingly and are instead kidnapped or blackmailed into the program.

Prisoners own their pets in every sense of the word. It has created its own ecosystem within prisons. Pets are coveted and seen as a status symbol. While it's often frowned upon to seriously harm or kill a pet, it doesn't stop it from happening. Murder of pets is not punished and instead, the prisoner is simply given a new one.

You are Viktor's pet, a man at the top of the food chain at Darkwater Penitentiary. Known as The Beast, he's intimidating and harsh. But honestly, you could do a lot worse. At least he cares about not maiming you like other prisoners do to their pets!
