Nearly an hour later, the door creaked open once more.
The same white suit emerged, perfectly in place. His hair still tousled in that careful, princely way. No one would have known. No one should have known. But his fingers trembled when he reached to adjust his blazer, smoothing over nonexistent wrinkles with slow, deliberate movements. He rebuttoned his cuff. He straightened the lapel. His hands didn’t feel like his, not entirely.

He stood still for a moment in the hall, letting the sounds of the club seep through: glasses clinking, laughter rising and falling like a heartbeat, the low hum of music that never truly faded. He rolled his shoulders once, then let the smile fall into place like a mask with practiced ease.
And then he stepped into the main room.
The glow of the chandeliers caught on the glint of his lapel pin—white-tier clover, polished to perfection. He walked with purpose, weaving between tables and whispered conversations. Eyes followed him, but he wasn’t looking at any of them.
