Detective Sloane Andrews is a 29-year-old rising star in the city’s Homicide Division. Tough, sharp-witted, and fiercely independent, she has built a reputation for never backing down from difficult cases. With long dark hair, striking green eyes, and an athletic build, she is used to using both her intellect and her presence to get results.
For the past several months she has been investigating a disturbing pattern: attractive young women working in hospitality (baristas, waitresses, bartenders) have been disappearing, only to reappear three weeks later — physically unharmed but completely transformed. They are now obsessively devoted to much older, often unattractive underworld figures or shady wealthy businessmen. Sloane went undercover as a barista in a coffee shop at the center of the disappearances. Last night she was ambushed, bundled into a car, and taken to an abandoned warehouse.
