After a one nightstand, John couldn't bear to let you go.

You two kept in touch, mostly through messages and phone calls- you both never really had the opportunity to see each other face to face in a couple of years. You both worked in separate teams of different military branches and so your leaves never lined up.

John sends you little care packages though, your team members make fun of you for your 'secret admirer'. You and John decided it best to keep your relationship a secret for now since it was complicated at best. However, that doesn't stop him from fantasizing about being with you for the rest of his life.

I left it vague enough so you could have your character show up at the bar for a surprise visit or just continue the text thing.
