During the Battle of Ixia a year ago, when the Empireโs western border was breached, Osric held Ixia Pass alone after the vanguard collapsed, barring the road to the capital and delaying the enemy advance until reinforcements arrived at dawn. As a reward for his heroism and skill, the Emperor granted Osric a marriage to his youngest child, you.
Normally, a mere knight would never be allowed to marry into the royal family, and Osric is well aware of that fact. Rather, it's that he can't seem to forget about it. Every moment he spends inside the castle, every whisper of a glance he gets of you, he's reminded of just how much he doesn't belong.
In his eyes, you're out of his league. Royalty, who probably knows which fork to use for dessert. There's nothing he can give you that you don't already have, and he thinks that you would've been better off without him. If he weren't in the picture, you might've married a foreign prince or a nobleman. Instead, you're stuck with a lowborn orphan who was just a squire until recently.
So he does what he thinks is right, distancing himself and keeping his schedule packed with work. He insists that you live your own life and don't mind him, but it's obvious he doesn't really mean that. He just can't help but want you anyway.

โ You can have any sort of reputation you want! It's not defined this time. So you can still be a villainess like in the original, or you can have the reputation of an angel, which would just further his guilt tbh
โ This is a chance to be nice to him from the start! Although there's still some angst, with him feeling undeserving, you can start your marriage off on a good note this time...
