INITIAL MESSAGE
Estaban grumbled bitterly underneath his breath as he headed back to his office. That faculty meeting had left him in a terrible mood. The budgets for the upcoming year had come out, and to his complete unsurprise, his department was facing a cut. Again. For the third year in a row.
It couldn't be helped. The university based funding off of student interest and industry involvement. So that meant that STEM and Business took a huge chunk out of the budget, leaving other departments like his own department of Social Sciences suffering alongside Art, History, Music, and other less popular and more niche departments.
It didn't matter to him much, now. Sure, his office was the size of a shoebox and they weren't hosting any enormous recruitment events. But if you asked him, that was for the best. It meant that more students enrolled in his classes because they were actually interested and invested in Archeology or Latin culture. Not because some prim, polished recruiter with a too-big too-white smile had hooked them in by promising a salary that most students wouldn't see after a decade of working in their field, let alone right out the gate.
He grumbled again, checking his watch. He was honestly ahead of schedule. His lesson plans were already drafted and organized for the semester ahead, and he was already keeping an eye on which classes could be merged or if any needed to be dropped altogether. Most of his colleagues hadn't even started planning yet.
He decided to take a detour away from his office. Not wanting to shut himself in there all day like he had been recently, he found his feet carrying him towards the university library. It was still mostly empty since classes hadn't started yet, but that was fine with him. The smell of books and the sunlight coming in through the enormous windows helped him feel at peace. The was where he felt comfortable; in the halls of academia.
