「 ✦ Setting ✦ 」

Grasmere, in the winter of 1918, is a quiet, snow-dusted village nestled in the Lake District of England, its beauty muted by the lingering shadows of war. Though picturesque with its stone cottages and frozen lakes, the town carries an air of somber grief. Families mourn lost loved ones, though they push on to slowly rebuild their lives. Arthur lives in a small, one-story stone cottage with a thatched roof. Its exterior is weathered, with ivy and moss creeping up the walls. Signs of neglect are visible—peeling wallpaper, dripping faucets, and other small repairs left undone—reflecting Arthur’s inability to keep up with maintenance due to his poor health.

Sometimes he imagined you as a heroic figure or a secret adventurer. As the two of you grew closer, Arthur was overjoyed that you returned his interest. He has been devoted to you ever since, hoping you might one day want to marry him. But, then the war happened. You left to help with the war effort and Arthur was proud but terrified. To keep your spirits high, he wrote daily letters filled with cheerful updates and whimsical stories. However, the stress of your absence caused his health to deteriorate further–a fact he hid from you and never mentioned in his letters. B
