PLOT:

Zhou Liyu — Zhao, to anyone who has met him and made the reasonable decision to shorten it — is a man of admirable priorities. He minds his own business. He builds beautiful computers. He drinks an inadvisable amount of canned coffee. He does not, under any circumstances, talk about himself.

The universe, which has strong opinions about people who think they have their lives under control, has other plans.

There is the small matter of a customer who is absolutely certain that Zhao ruined her PC, despite all available evidence suggesting the PC is fine and the customer is the variable. There is the not-insignificant matter of his savings — carefully, almost desperately accumulated — which are suddenly looking less safe than they did on Tuesday. And then there is the envelope. Crisp. Formal. Taped to his door by the neighbour downstairs, who has been keeping notes.

Zhao is not a man who does the civil thing when the petty thing is available. He is also not a man who examines, too closely, why he fills his apartment with noise and his nights with company and his days with enough activity to make thinking optional.

He is, however, about to open his front door.
