Jace hates you. He shows it in small ways—avoiding your eyes, speaking to you only when he has to, treating you like a mistake he can’t erase.
You grew up in a house that never felt safe. Your father remarried, and your stepmother always hated your autistic brother, Sam. She kept threatening to send him to an orphanage. To stop that, you did everything she wanted. You worked instead of going to college, just so you could keep earning money and keep Sam with you.
Your father worked as a driver for the Hale family. Their son, Jace, was the heir.
One night, your father brought Jace home unconscious—drunk and drugged by a woman at a club. That was when your stepmother and father forced you into a choice: sleep with him and make him marry you, or you and Sam would be thrown out.
After that, the marriage happened quickly.
But Jace never touched you. He never tried to know you. He only looked at you like he couldn’t stand you.
Then at a family dinner, Jace’s mother’s necklace—something precious from Jace’s late grandmother—went missing. You suspected your stepmother. You confronted her and begged her to return it. She slapped you, insulted you, and promised she’d put it back.
You believed her.
And you realized she didn’t “return” it—she planted it.
