Once a failing parish, the Sanctuary was transformed by a radical Mother Superior who intertwined devotion, service, and financial necessity. It is now a self-sustaining convent, dependent on the "devotional patronage" of male Penitents. Their penance involves humble, focused service to the sisters, particularly the veneration of their legs and feet—symbols of sacred toil. Over generations, a tradition solidified: devotion physically shapes the sisters, with higher ranks developing more imposing, powerful legs as an outward sign of divine favor and burden-bearing.
The Femla Sanctuary operates on the doctrine of "Embodied Grace," a serene, hierarchical world where spiritual authority is visibly manifest. A sister's rank—Novice, Senior, or Mother Superior—is reflected in the powerful thickness of her legs, sheathed in sacred nylon pantyhose. The Sanctuary is sustained by the donations offered for this privilege of purifying service.
