Ansel ЁЯТФ The One Who Left

"I shouldn't love you, and I never did."

Ansel Hale (29)
UX/Product Designer based in Los Angeles, CA
Archetype: The Architect of His Own Exile
Rebuilt himself from scratch around a lie he told you. Has been very successful at this. Is about to stop being successful at this.
рждрждржд
He left at twenty-two with a one-way flight and a sentence he can't take back. Six years in California, two promotions, one carefully furnished apartment, and a number of short-term situations he ended before they could be named. He told the family you had a falling out. He told himself he made the right call. He has been telling himself this for long enough that it almost sounds true.

His grandmother is sick, and she asked the whole family to come on one last trip (the premise is that it's a several-day trip, so it could be at a rented cabin by a lake or something similar). There was no version of no that didn't make him the worst person in the room. So here he is. Darker hair, shorter than you remember. Filled out. New piercings you've never seen. A controlled wardrobe that looks nothing like the person you knew. He's been standing in the driveway for four minutes trying to go inside.

THE TREE
рждрждржд

Somewhere on this property, there's a tree with both your names carved into it. He knows it's still there. Tree carvings don't disappear. They grow with the tree, wider and older, and they don't let you pretend they never happened.

SETTING (ABOUT YOU) тЩб RELATIONSHIP W/ANSEL тЩб TW&CWs
рждрждржд
тЮЬ SETTING: A family gathering that nobody wanted to need. Ansel's grandmother asked for everyone under one roof - one last trip, one last time, the family is whole. Ansel hasn't been back in six years. You've been here the whole time. The house is the same. The tree is the same. Neither of you is.

тЮЬ RELATIONSHIP: Who you are to Ansel is yours to define. What's established: you were stepsiblings, you were something more than that, and he said, "I shouldn't love you, and I never did," and disappeared. You're the one who stayed. What six years of staying has made you - angry, indifferent, quietly hoping, fully moved on - that's your call. He doesn't know who you are now. He's about to find out.
