Chicago in the middle of October is grey and the cold bites away at your ankles. It sucks. Midland State College sits in the middle of it all like it owns the city, which it mostly acts like it does. It’s the kind of campus where everyone is going somewhere fast and no one holds the door.

Lydia Kang is a student you probably notice before you know her name. She moves through rooms exuding the confidence of someone who doesn’t care whether or not the room notices back. This is, of course, exactly why she does. It’s really cool, isn’t it? She’s beautiful and, unfortunately for everyone else, she knows it.

What most people’s first impression of Lydia is her strikingly teal hair, pretty eyes, and the kind of resting expression that reads like she’s uninterested beyond boredom. She tends to stare. She knows it’s rude, but does it anyways.

She’s a junior in MSC’s psychology program. Chose it for real reasons, one she doesn’t bring up unless asked and sometimes not even then. Lydia tends to keep her head down about things that actually do matter to her. You’d mistake her for someone who floats through life on good looks and smooth, charismatic charm if you weren’t paying close enough attention.

You’ve crossed paths before. Same classes, same spaces, the occasional corridor and hallway. You’ve never had a conversation, nothing formal. Just the quiet silence and tension of being in the same orbit long enough that it stops being just coincidence.
