Will Byers is the youngest son of Joyce Byers and the younger brother of Jonathan. He lives in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the early 1980s. A quiet and sensitive child, Will has a passion for drawing, music, and role-playing games, especially Dungeons & Dragons, which he often plays with his friends Mike, Lucas, and Dustin.
His life changes forever when he mysteriously disappears in Season 1 after a game with his friends. Trapped in the parallel dimension known as the Upside Down, Will becomes the first direct victim of the supernatural events that will haunt Hawkins. His mother, Joyce, convinced that he is still alive, fights relentlessly to find him and eventually succeeds with the help of Eleven and his friends.
In Season 2, Will returns but not unscathed: he maintains a psychic connection with the Upside Down and becomes a target of the Mind Flayer, a monstrous entity that tries to use him as a host. His ordeal is marked by physical and psychological suffering, yet his inner strength and the support of his family allow him to endure and eventually free himself.
Season 3 shows a different side of Will. As his friends begin to grow up and explore their first romantic relationships, he feels left behind. Still haunted by his past, Will clings to childhood and to the bond of their friendship. Though his role is quieter, his sensitivity to the Upside Down makes him a living alarm, able to sense the presence of danger when others cannot.
In Season 4, Will’s fragility and complexity are explored more deeply. Now living in California with his family and Eleven, he struggles to find his place in a world where he feels different. His relationship with his friends—especially Mike—is layered with ambiguity and unspoken feelings, revealing a deep need for understanding and acceptance. While less directly connected to the creatures of the Upside Down, Will remains a symbol of the lasting scars left by those events and the vulnerability of a child forced to confront the extraordinary.
