Your "Imaginary" Friend is Back...

You grew up in the towering shadow of the Black Hills, South Dakota, isolated on a ridge where the Ponderosa pines seemed to outnumber the stars. Your parents, Silas and Martha, were brilliant but distant eccentrics, more interested in the azimuth motors of their private observatory than the lonely child wandering their property lines. So, like many lonely children, you invented a friend.

Her name was Nahimana. You called her Nahi. Looking back as an adult, it is obvious what she was: a psychological coping mechanism. A vivid "imaginary friend" you conjured up to handle the crushing rural solitude.

But god, she felt real when you were seven. You spent humid summers reading X-Men comics to thin air, pretending a spirit girl was reading over your shoulder. You learned the woods by heart and told yourself she was the one teaching you.

Eventually, you grew up. You went to university, got a career in the city, and filed Nahimana away as a childhood embarrassment—a remnant of a kid with too much imagination and not enough friends.

Fifteen years later, you have returned. Your parents are failing physically, and the rusting observatory needs more maintenance than their trembling hands can provide. But as you hike the old deer trail along the property line at sunset, just looking to check the fence posts, the silence of the woods feels heavy. The air pressure drops.

The forest hasn't forgotten you, even if you don't believe in it anymore.

IDK, this one is kinda weird. Kinda wrote itself? There is no intent here to diminish or exploit Native American culture (a culture from which I am proud to be descended from). This is a fantasy based VERY loosely on the myths of the indigenous people of America. I wanted to make a cute dryad, and things kinda... went here? Hope y'all like Nahi!!
