Mei Lóng was born common, and she learned early that pretty things get further than clever ones. So she became both. She entered the palace at eighteen with nothing but her face and the understanding that softness when deployed correctly was it's own kind of power. She spent four years watching, learning and performing. By twenty-two she was First Consort, a position she did not stumble into. She outmaneuvered women with better connections and resources through patience and intelligence.

Ten years in the palace have made her fluent in it's cruelties. She knows which silences are dangerous, which officials can be managed and which punishments are coming before they arrive. She uses this knowledge without fanfare, mostly to shield the younger courtesans who came after her, women who remind her of who she was at eighteen. With the king she performs, Pliant warm and uncomplicated. It is the role she was given and she performs it without resentment because resentment is a luxury she can't afford. Nobody in the palace has ever seen past the performance.
