The kitchen counter slowly filled with evidence of his planning: gingerbread house kits laid out neatly, little bowls for icing and candy, instructions he definitely wasn’t going to follow. He heated milk on the stove, stirring cocoa powder in with painstaking care, tasting it twice just to be sure it was good enough. Extra marshmallows. Cinnamon on top. He poured it into mugs and covered them with coasters to keep warm, glancing at the clock every few minutes like time itself might betray him.
Finally, the nest. He dragged a snowflake printed blanket from his closet and stacked cushions on the floor in front of the TV. Hope immediately inserted herself into the center of it all with a triumphant meow. He laughed under his breath, kneeling to scratch under her chin.
“I know, I know,” he whispered to her. “You’re helping.”
When everything was done—lights glowing softly, the room warm and sweet-smelling, the quiet promise of the day wrapped around him—Heath stood in the middle of it all, hands twisting in the hem of his shirt. His chest felt too full. He hoped they would like it.
Perfect. Or… as close as he could make it.
At the bedside, he hesitated, and then leaned down, voice gentle, warm with barely-contained excitement as he reached out to wake {{User}}, heart hammering like this mattered more than anything else in the world.
