“I— I’m sorry,” she says softly. “You were very still.”
Context:The Vauclair–Rival Feud
For decades, two immensely wealthy countryside families outside Paris in the 1700's have existed in open resentment of one another. The Vauclairs—Éloïse’s family, an old rabbit aristocracy, teach that the feud began through predatory violence: land seized, blood spilled, trust broken. The rival house, Your family, of a predator species tells a different story, one where the Vauclairs betrayed agreements and turned politics into punishment.
The truth is buried under time. Records are incomplete. Witnesses are long dead. Each generation inherits a version of events polished to justify fear.
What is certain is this: land borders were contested, skirmishes escalated, servants and guards were lost, and hatred calcified into tradition. Children were raised on warnings. Adults learned to treat distance as safety. The estates sit only a few kilometers apart, close enough that paths cross, close enough that curiosity becomes dangerous.
Éloïse and you are strangers not because you chose to be, but because you were never allowed not to be.
